SCHOOL MISSION AND VISION STATEMENT
Mission
It is our mission to provide a learning environment that ensures high expectations for all of our scholars through instruction, real-world applications and technology that promotes and fosters knowledge and skill.
Vision
Sylvan will provide a nurturing and safe environment where scholars become critical thinkers, problem solvers, lifelong learners, and productive citizens.
BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In Grade 6, instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking. Descriptions of the four critical areas
follow:
UNITS OF STUDY:
Unit 1 – Number System Fluency
Unit 2 - Expressions
Unit 3 - One Step Equations and Inequalities
Beginning experiences in solving equations will require students to understand the meaning of the equation as well as the question being asked. The use of illustrations, drawings, and balance models to represent and solve equations and inequalities will help students to develop this understanding. Solving equations will also require students to develop effective strategies such as fact families, and inverse operations. As effective strategies are developed, students will revisit rate and proportional reasoning problems and solve them using strategies developed in solving similar one-step equations.
Unit 4 - Rate, Ratio, and Proportional Reasoning Using Equivalent Fractions
Unit 5 – Rational Explorations: Numbers and their Opposites
Unit 6 - Area and Volume
Unit 7 – Statistics
Course Objectives:
Georgia Standards of Excellence for 6th grade Math will be taught during this course. Please refer to the Georgia Standards of Excellence website for details listing standards
https://www.georgiastandards.org/Georgia-Standards/Pages/Math-6-8.aspx
Textbook: McGraw-Hill Math Course 2
Supplies needed: pencils, box of tissue, loose leaf paper
Academic Honesty:
Atlanta Public Schools and Sylvan Hills Middle School demand academic honesty and integrity. Students’ work should be their own. Cheating of any kind is prohibited and will result in the disciplinary actions as well as a zero on the assignment. Talking and any other type of communication during.
MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS/ PROJECTS:
The framework tasks represent the level of depth, rigor, and complexity expected of all sixth grade students. These tasks, or tasks of similar depth and rigor, may be used to demonstrate evidence of learning.
SYLVAN HILLS’ GRADING PROCEDURES AND SCALE
The school-wide assignment tasks and assigned weights include the following:
As Assignment Tasks Weight
Classwork/Participation 30%
Tests 25%
Projects 20%
Quizzes 15%
Homework 10%
